Santa Monica Urban Forest

The inspiration for this series started in the spring of 2016, when my daughter innocently asked me about a tree during one of our walks. I realized that I didn't know the first thing about any of the trees in the city, but—like everything else in an urban environment—I knew that someone was putting a lot of thought into the selection and care of every public tree in the city. I started working with the City of Santa Monica to better understand the design of the urban forest, and, as part of this work, I started making portraits of trees throughout the city. The series has turned into something that I am continually adding and expanding as I find interesting specimens around the city.
